Avoid Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever Laos

Just four months into 2013 it was already apparent that a dengue fever outbreak had begun in Laos. Nationwide, the number of people afflicted has reached 2,700 and 11 people have died.  From 1st of January to the 8th of May 2013, at Setthathirath Hospital alone, there’s been over 400 cases of Dengue, including four deaths. The cause of death was encephalitis; which occurs when the virus reaches the brain. Sadly, these patients could have been treated but waited too long before seeking treatment. Prof. Dr. Khambay Phongsavat, Director of Setthathirath Hospital in Vientiane Capital, announced that Setthathirath Hospital alone has been averaging about 3-5 cases per day, a much higher rate of infection in comparison with last year.

There have been 800 recorded cases of Dengue Fever in the first few months of 2013, with the highest number of infections between March and May in over thirteen years. It is expected that by the year’s end this outbreak will have caused the highest number of cases in ten years.

The director also warned that it is everyone’s responsibility to help curb the outbreak by eradicating potential mosquito breeding sites, or stagnant water sources that could be contaminated with dengue, such as old car tyres, bowls or dishes, (coconut) shells, boxes or cans and any other items that might contain stagnant water. Any outdoor toilets or latrines utilizing stored water must be changed weekly. Everyone should clean their house, as well as engine rooms in factories, and water sources at hospitals, offices etc. Prof. Dr. Phongsavat suggests concentrating on three key areas: live clean, eat clean and drink clean.

He urges everyone to take care of their health and monitor children closely. If anyone has a fever that lasts more than two or three days, they should seek immediate medical attention at a hospital or local clinic. People must not purchase their own medication and absolutely must not try to treat themselves, as the wrong treatments can be extremely dangerous when combined with dengue fever.
