Lao Central Bank To Release New 100,000 Note

The Bank of the Lao PDR will issue a 100,000 kip banknote early next month in a bid to encourage more people to use the national currency. Speaking at a press conference in Vientiane yesterday, Currency Issuing Department Director General Mr Souphat Khotnhotha said the main purpose of putting the 100,000 kip note in circulation was to make it easier for people to make cash payments.

Recent months have seen quite a number of power failures and blackouts around Vientiane. Short ‘brown-outs’ are common during the hot season as too many air-conditioners switched on at once can overload the power grid, however that isn’t the case right now. Many expats living in areas with major infrastructure upgrades nearby have reported frequent blackouts and power cuts, especially on weekends. It seems that road upgrades around Donpamai Village and the addition of new transformers in Thongkang/Wat Nak Village mean power cuts on Saturdays and Sundays. These last from ten minute stretches to an entire day.
